Clearcoating or otherwise protecting polished bronze?

Encode has an external rudder assembly that is made of bronze.previous owner let it corrode and turn green.

I've cleaned and polished the bronze but was hoping someone knew of some sort of clearcoat or protectant finish i could apply to keep it from corrosion so quickly? Preferably one that would hold up well with exposure to salt water.

    Thanks,

    Greg

    Hi Greg.

Couple of questions... do you keep the boat in the water or out?  How much are you using the boat?  Salt water or fresh water mostly?

If the running gear has light use, a clear coat of spray varnish will keep the shine, but it is a temporary thing.  I don't think I know of anyone who does it.   Get ready to polish again if you want it to shine. Others please chime in!

I've used a product called Sharkhide Metal Protectant. It is glossy, clear, and easy to apply. The label on the can says, "SHARHIDE WILL NEVER, Peal, Chip, Flake, or Yellow. A single Application Can Last Several Years."

I put it on my rudder 3 years ago. The finish now has a few brown spots showing up. But it has not pealed, chipped, or flaked. I only put my boat in fresh water.

    Thanks Corrine and Steve!

I've gotta get in the habit of checking the forum more often- I posted this and then didn't check for answers.

Boat is kept on a trailer when not in use. 90% saltwater, but it gets a fresh water rinse and wipe down as soon as we get home.

Steve- I saw a reference to your product while searching the recesses of the internet. Sounds like a good option. I ended up with Everbrite ProtectaClear. https://www.everbritecoatings.com/protectaclear

They said I should be able to get a couple of years out of it, which will hopefully align with the varnish maintenance schedule!

It went on easy and looks good in the garage. Can't wait to get the boat put back k together and give it a trial run. I will try to update this thread with my experiences so the next person doesn't have to start from scratch.

I called a good friend of mine that has been in the boat repair business for over 40 years and he recommended using Penetrol.  Apply with a rag once a day for 3 days when it is warm.  Protection lasts 1-1/2 to2 years.
